Introducing the L.A.B Golf DF 2.1 Stock Putter
Yes, it has a unique look. And yet, there’s a legion of golfers worldwide who now consider the Directed Force the "Mona Lisa" of mallets. However, they only reached this conclusion after experiencing its remarkable putting performance.
The Backstory
The DF 2.1 was founded by Bill Presse, a former mini-tour player who aimed to design a putter that would simplify his stroke by ensuring a square putter face every time. This led him to invent Lie Angle Balance.
Presse also wanted to develop a forgiving putter head to improve consistency on off-center hits. His vision resulted in the DF 2.1's radical shape, which resembles a branding iron but performs exceptionally well.
The Claim
The DF 2.1 offers unique capabilities due to Lie Angle Balance (L.A.B.), allowing golfers to repeat their putting stroke consistently and with less effort by eliminating torque.
All L.A.B. putters, including the MEZZ.1, MEZZ.1 MAX, LINK.1, and DF3, feature Lie Angle Balance. While the DF 2.1 maximizes forgiveness, other models provide enhanced feedback, making them suitable for golfers who prioritize different performance characteristics.
Why L.A.B. Golf Dislikes Torque
Torque has historically challenged golfers, often leading them to unknowingly compensate with uneven hand pressure. Despite various balance types offered by leading manufacturers—such as toe hang, counter-balance, and face balance—none fully address this issue. Lie Angle Balance, however, does.
Capabilities of Lie Angle Balance
Lie Angle Balance does not read greens or line up shots; golfers will still need to determine these factors themselves. But it aids with distance control by preventing the putter from “flopping” during the stroke, allowing it to work with, rather than against, the golfer's movement. Off-center hits with the DF 2.1 also have minimal impact on performance, lending it the nickname "Darth Vader of putters."
How It’s Made
L.A.B. craftsmen use a specialized formula to calculate the two primary elements of Lie Angle Balance:
- The position, angle, and depth of the CNC-milled shaft hole in the putter head.
- The exact weight required in the putter’s weight ports.
With precisely milled weights and tungsten powder, this balancing process can take 30 minutes or more to meet exact specifications.
For those preferring a standard option, the DF 2.1 Stock is available with popular configurations at a lower price. Most golfers find the 34-inch, 69-degree spec works well, particularly for those accustomed to standard clubs. All DF 2.1 Stock putters come with a Press II 3-Degree grip and Alignment Aid #1.
